I’ve seen a lot of questions from the general public lately on breeder pricing of dogs, Doodles specifically, since that’s what I breed. I wanted to address this from a mathematical standpoint alone.
There are MANY more costs involved, so I’m keeping it simple....
As a good, conscientious breeder there are numerous costs involved before puppies are ever even conceived. But, for the sake of simplicity, let’s start calculating at the arrival of a litter of puppies. Puppies and their mother require constant care and attention. Cleanliness and their health are of the utmost importance. Breeders will tell you that they spend countless hours caring for their litters, and that time only increases as puppies develop and grow. But, let’s just say that a breeder only works with their litter for 8 hours per day. And let’s say that they only make Federal minimum wage for their 8 hour days. ($8.25/hr). Most states require puppies to remain with the breeder for the first 8 weeks of their lives.
8 weeks = 56 days
56 days x 8 hours per day = 448 hrs
448 hrs x $8.25 = $3696.00
This is a gross pay calculation of an estimated TIME ONLY that your breeder cares for their puppies.
This does not include their costs of parent dogs, veterinary care, health testing, heartworm preventive, flea medicine, toys, beds, food, etc. of the parent dogs before they ever produce a litter.
None of most breeders’ puppies are priced at this amount. I’ve kept this calculation simple. Find a breeder who offers a good health guarantee on their puppies and takes time to do it right.
This is just something to think about from the breeder aspect of things. And by all means, if you’d rather adopt than shop for your furry friend, please do that. Just remember, you usually get what you pay for.
